This map show the best location for a school indicated by the bright red/pink color. This was determined based on several factors including the distance to recreation center, slope, distance to other schools, and landuse.

This type of map will be very useful in my future efforts to establish camping spots along the French Broad River.

Timber Harvesting

The map below represent the area of land that is available for timber harvesting in Tongass National Forest. The areas that are excluded are Goshawk habitat and stream buffers. The stream buffers are 50 and 100 meters and the Goshawk buffer is 800 meters. This still leaves quite a bit of harvestable land.

This maps shows Goshawks nesting sites within a certain area of Tongass National Park. These nesting sites represent areas that logging will have to avoid. The purpose of this exercise to determine the area of land that can be logged in order to determine the value of land.

Creating Reports

Today we generated a report as if we were a real estate agent. We narrowed down the properties that our client was searching for and created a query to display properties with 3 bedrooms, that were less than $175,000, and had three bedrooms. We then learned to create an attractive report that displayed this information as if we were presenting it to our client.

The maps below represent the assignments in Chapter 15 and 16. These chapters had us editing and creating new data in Arc Map. I found this to be very interesting as it represented work that I have long wondered how to accomplish. These tools will be very valuable as I am adding new streams, construction sites, etc to maps that I will soon be creating.

The class on February 20th covered data sources and data entry. This included map scale, map generalization, and digitzing data. We also watched a brief demonstration on how to digitize data. This was especially interesting because I have needed this skill in the past to represent trails or creeks that were not displayed on the maps that I have. I think I will use this tool a great deal.

The map below reflects a the fastest growing cities data. This data was originally unknown and therefore the exercise required it to be defined. It was defined correctly as North American Lambert Conformal Conic and therefore match the base map properly.

On Monday the 4th a good portion of class was spent discussing how maps are displayed. Specific topics such as latitude and longitude, shape of the earth, cartesian and spherical coordinates, and others were explored. The general topic for the study of this information is called Geodesy. Geodesy is study of shape and size of the earth.

Here is my chapter four assignment and also a GIS map that I think is important. It highlights the failing streams in Buncombe County and for the first time since the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972 our waterways are becoming more polluted. The main reason for this decline in water quality is sediment from new development.

Our first GIS assignment tracks the flight and disappearance of Amelia Earhart. This assignment shows how GIS can help track and narrow the search for the lost plane.

I also want to post an urgent annoucement. All Creatures Great and Small, a Hendersonville based Shelter is having to close their doors because of the lack of care the animals received. The irony is that these animals will not be euthinized if they are not all adopted by this Friday. I adopted a cat yesterday and she has is great so far. Please visit them this week to adopt an animal, even if you can't keep it. You can always find another home for it. The adoption fee is $65 for cats and $75 for dogs, if they are spayed or neutered. If not they are free.

Day 1 GIS Class

The first of my GIS class has begun. We are now working on creating and posting our class blog. This blog will be updated to reflect our assignments throughout the semester.
